Birth Story:
I don't know if some of you remember my frantic question on Tuesday the 6th of March.....I was asking about some liquid that
just soaked my panties in the AM. Well, I called my DR in Juneau, who sent me to our clinic. There they did what they called
a FERN test, which is a test where to swipe some fluids from your vagina and look under a microscope to see if the fluid looks
like a FERN, which when it does, your water has broken.
In my case, it did......WOW~!! One small problem; our clinic does not do births if it can be prevented, but our only road
out of town was closed due to avalanches and the planes weren't flying either. We knew the Ferry wasn't in, as it is in only
on Monday and Fridays. Some little birdy at the clinic though told us they added a Ferry to the schedule that morning, and
it would leave at 2:30pm.
Me and DH went back to my work, where I started to wrap up my desk and leave some last minute instructions for the person
taking over my job while I am gone. Then we ran to the house and started throwing clothes in a suitcase. Kaitlyn's was already
packed. We made a gazillion phone calls and ran to the Ferry Terminal.
Once on the boat we started to watch a movie, and at 4-ish went to the cafeteria. At that time I felt a little cramp and
was wondering if that was a contraction??? No idea.
I got these little cramps for about an hour, very wide apart. Then at 5 they started to get closer and closer and more
painful. ....Don't forget we are on the Ferry and it takes about 8 hours to get to Juneau.....
So at around 6 we found out we won't be stopping in Haines which was beautiful, and cut down the Ferry ride by 2 hours.
At the same times the contractions were about 5-10 minutes apart and getting real painful.
The purser knew of my condition and came to check on us, and kinda started freaking herself. She informed the captain
and she announced over the intercom that if there is a doctor, nurse or EMT on board to please come to the pursers desk.
An EMT was actually on board and took my pulse, checked my oxygen level and blood pressure while these contractions became
more frequent and more painful. I tried not to cry it out (which I didn't) to not attract any attention.
Meanwhile DH is on the phone with the hospital and the on call DR there is explaining to him to get some clean linens
ready (!!!???) .... and the DR was sending an ambulance down to the Juneau ferry terminal. Let me tell you this was really
intense.....I was truly afraid we were going to have Kaitlyn on the Ferry, while she was still laying breech!
Anyhow, at 7:30 we got to Juneau, the paramedics sat me in a wheelchair as the golly didn't fit in the elevator, got me
in the ambulance and we were on our way.
At 8:10pm we were at the hospital and at 8:20 the Doctor told me to start pushing. (At some miraculous reason Kaitlyn
had turned around within the time they checked in the ambulance and when the DR did a quick Ultra Sound)
HOLY COW!!! It hurt soooooo bad!!! I never thought myself as a screamer but WHOOHEEE I was screaming like I never screamed
before in my life. My sweet sweet DH was right by my side and hold my leg and pushed me up at every contraction. Probably
45 minutes after pushing I was ready to give up..... the DR said he could see her head and asked if I wanted to feel it, I
did and it was the weirdest sensation ever, after that it gave me an extra energy booster to start pushing harder. At 9:43pm
Kaitlyn Lena was born!! She is the most beautiful girl EVER!!!! I fell in love right there and then. She was on my belly
for a long time and then they took her right next to my bed to weigh, measure and handprint her.
Meanwhile I still had to push out the placenta. Let me tell you this hurt almost as bad as getting my daughter out! They
gave me some medicine to start up my contractions once again, and it took perhaps an agonizing 30 minutes to get it out....ouch!
After that they put Kaitlyn back in my arms and the DR started to sow me up (10 stitches!!).
We just got discharged from the hospital on 3/16 as Kaitlyn developed some jaundice and had to get rid of all the belliruben
to get that down. (It basically means because she is about 3 1/2 weeks early her liver is not fully developed to get rid of
all the red blood cells and makes her look yellow.) She had to lay in ultra violet lights for a while.
She is doing great now, she has gained over a pound and is now almost 7lbs! She eats like crazy and is absolutely fascinated
by her tongue…. She also has so many different expressions on her face, its crazy! It is absolutely amazing how
much you can love something so little!
