Birth Story:

After a stressful day at work, I noticed that my swolen legs that had been retaining water felt especially terrible. I thought they were going to explode. My husband has high blood pressure, so I decided to check mine with his monitor. It was at about 168/95 and I freaked out--my last dr. appt a week before it was 112/80ish! I talked to my dr's nurse and was told to watch it overnight to see if it was just stress.

So the next morning I wake up and check again, this time it is 170/110! I called my office again and this time spoke with the on-call OB doc who told me to come in, and bring my stuff because it was likely I would stay overnight.

At labor and delivery I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and would remain in the hospital for monitoring overnight. The doc told me I would not make it to my delivery date, I would be on bedrest from here on and we would start taking measures (steroids) to mature the baby's lungs faster.

My sister happened to call while we were at the hospital, so I gave her an update on my condition. She called back later that day to say she was coming down to keep me company for a little while, and would bring my mom with. This gave my DH some time to get away for dinner with a friend of ours in town. My blood pressure had seemed to stabalize--the last reading was 125/85, so we pretty much figured no big deal for the time being. About an hour or so after mom and sis showed up, my BIL (who lives out of town and I would never think to show up) decided to come to the hospital for a little while. As we chatted, I noticed that all of a sudden I was having difficulty focusing on anyone in the room. I could hear people talking, and could "see" but didn't know where anyone was. After that, I don't remember much. From what I am told, I had a siezure at this point due to the amount of water I was retaining.

At this point I went from having my baby before my due date to having my baby NOW. My memory is very, very spotty, but I know that they began inducing. I was at contractions about 6-8 minutes apart and dialated to 2 cm when they brought in an ultrasound machine to see where the baby was positioned. When it became clear that baby was breech, my doctor told me that while in many cases he would allow a patient to make a decision here as to what to do, that would not be my case--the baby would be born before midnight with a c-section.

From here, things FINALLY went smoothly. Lucy Mae was born screaming and her apgar score was a 9. She did not need to be incubated at any point, and aside from a little trouble keeping her body temperature up occasionally has been as strong as a horse. Due to her being breech, she does have a dislocated hip that requires her to be in a harness full-time to keep it from slipping out of its socket, but we're keeping our fingers crossed that this will correct itself.

And baby makes three! Talk about a whirlwind St. Patrick's Day!
